Improvements to the Civic Centre

Community groups and residents in Welwyn will now have the benefit of improvements to the Civic Centre in Prospect Place following the installation of new double-glazed aluminium doors. The project will be officially opened by Councillor Lynn Sparks, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Borough, on Thursday 16th November at 11am and the Centre will be open for everyone to view.

This project has been funded by a grant of £12,500 from the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund via the Derbyshire Environmental Trust and funds of £20,000 from Welwyn Parish Council. The award has been managed and administered by community charity Groundwork Hertfordshire.

The Civic Centre now boasts new front doors including the installation of a set of fully automatic powered doors, replacement emergency exits doors and some replacement double-glazed windows to the Main Hall.

The Chairman of Welwyn Parish Council, Bill Morris, is delighted with the work and said “these improvements will improve the comfort levels for users, improve energy efficiency, reduce noise in the building and take the Civic Centre one step closer to a fully Disability Discrimination Act compliant building. I would like to thank the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund, Derbyshire Environmental Trust and Groundwork Hertfordshire for their support for this project, and Councillor Dennis Spruce for his commitment in driving this project forward. I would also like to thank our local contractors SJ Murphy, Old Welwyn Construction, Smiths Builders and Baldwin and Bleakley Electrical Services Ltd who have all done excellent work in bringing this project together”.

Further improvements are planned for the Civic Centre next year.

Santa needs your help!

Welwyn Round Table has been driving Father Christmas around Welwyn collecting donations for local charities for about 40 years. Unfortunately over the years membership of the group has dwindled and now they are unable to put on Santa with his sleigh for the parish.

The sleigh run runs for 6 consecutive evenings at the beginning of December and requires the float, a driver, Father Christmas and a minimum of 8 collectors. If you would be willing to volunteer and keep this traditional event  alive for the children of your parish please contact Malcolm Temple at
